Why a reading space matters
I’ve heard the advice so many times:
“If you want to raise a reader, create a cosy corner where books are always within reach.”
Now, I couldn’t agree more.
A reading nook doesn’t have to be complicated or picture-perfect. A few thoughtful touches are all it takes to make a child feel like the space is truly theirs.
Essentials for a child’s reading corner
Here are some easy ideas to get started:
-
A comfortable chair or soft floor cushion, something they can curl into with a favorite story
-
A cozy blanket, for those chilly Dutch evenings when stories stretch into bedtime
-
Soft, warm lighting, especially for the darker winter months
-
Art or decorations made by your child, so the space reflects their personality
-
A child-friendly bookshelf, where books are visible, easy to reach, and inviting
In our own home, this little reading corner is by far the cosiest spot in the room. It’s where stories begin and imaginations bloom.
The right bookshelf makes all the difference
At Onas, I select every bookshelf with your child’s experience in mind: safety, accessibility, and style.
Here are a few favourites from our collection:
-
Wall-mounted shelves that can grow with your child, placed low for toddlers, then adjusted higher as they get older
-
Open front-facing book displays that show covers instead of spines, perfect for visual exploration
-
Classic shelves with generous space for growing book collections
-
Designs with drawers or cabinets are ideal for storing art supplies and extra treasures nearby

No matter which style you choose, one thing matters most:
Books should always be visible, accessible, and a part of everyday life.

Every child deserves a quiet place to discover stories, whether it’s a corner by the window, a little tent in the playroom, or a beanbag next to their bed.
A reading corner is more than just a spot for books.
It’s a place to slow down. Ask questions. Dream.
It’s also a small but powerful way to support independence and lifelong curiosity.
